What Does “Package Treatment Plant” Mean?

A PTP is a compact, self-contained wastewater treatment system designed for a single home or a small group of properties. It is typically installed underground and operates continuously without day-to-day involvement from the homeowner.

Unlike older drainage systems, such as septic tanks, a PTP actively treats sewage and greywater, producing a much cleaner discharge that meets current environmental standards. Due to their performance and reliability, PTPs are now widely used for off-mains drainage across the UK.

  • Harsh cleaning chemicals or excessive detergents

  • Fats, oils, or non-biodegradable materials

When bacteria are damaged or killed, treatment efficiency reduces, and discharge quality can fall below acceptable standards. In some cases, the system may require professional reseeding, which can be costly and disruptive.

That said, normal household use, when products are used correctly and in moderation, will not harm a properly designed PTP.

 

Is a PTP Better for the Environment?

A septic tank mainly separates solids and releases partially treated wastewater into the ground. Whereas a PTP treats wastewater to a much higher standard before discharging it into the environment.

As environmental regulations have tightened, many older septic tanks no longer meet compliance requirements. For this reason, PTPs are now considered the preferred long-term drainage solution for many off-mains properties.

 

Do PTPs Need Electricity?

Most PTPs require a small electrical supply. Electricity powers pumps or aeration motors that introduce air into the system, supporting aerobic bacteria and improving treatment efficiency.

Running costs are generally low, and modern systems are designed to be energy efficient.
